Earth Science Week 2013

Earth Science Week

2013’s Earth Science Week ran from 7 – 13 October.

With a theme of ‘Geology Outside’, we hoped to encourage a greater appreciation of the geology that exists on our doorsteps in the UK – whether you live in the city or the countryside.

Regional and national events ran throughout the week, culminating in a great geology walk on Saturday 12 October. Material was made available on our website for self guided walks, and there were many walks organised by our Regional Groups.

If you joined in, we’d love to see pictures of the geology where you are – tweet us @geolsoc using the hashtag #greatgeowalk or email

Lesson plans, blogs and more that were published throughout the week are still available on the website.

Events for Earth Science Week included:

Plate tectonics

Monday 7 October: Lecture on Plate Tectonics

Pete Loader gave a lecture for Friends of the Society and School Affiliates on plate tectonics.

Curiosity Rover on Mars

Wednesday 9 October: Shell London Lecture

The Mars Science Laboratory Mission: The Curiosity Rover’s Exploration of Gale Crater (Sanjeev Gupta, Imperial College)

Saturday 12 October: Self Guided Geowalks

On 12 October we encouraged self guided walks that anyone, anywhere could participate in.  It was an opportunity to explore the geology in your local area, and send us your pictures! We posted links to online walking guides.
